The
Case Study Department of the Nephrology Nursing Journal invites
nephrology nurses of all levels and subspecialties to share their
clinical experience with their colleagues. The purpose of a case study
is to educate others through discussion of a patient’s clinical
presentation and nursing management. Practitioners and educators are
encouraged to submit manuscripts that address their patient-related
nursing care and solutions to situations encountered in the care of a
patient with renal disease and/or in performing extracorporeal
therapies. The author guidelines are a suggested format intended to
help the novice writer who needs assistance with organization of
material.
Case Studies should be approximately 400 to 600 words, or about 4 double-spaced, typewritten pages and should include:
- Patient Profile:
1/2 page, double-spaced, or 4 to 5 sentences. Give the reader a mental
image of the clinical situation and the patient’s presentation. Include
any history or background information pertinent to the current
situation or potential problems.
- Intended Patient Outcome(s): 1/2 page, double-spaced.
- Discussion:
2-3 pages, double-spaced. This is the bulk of the paper and should
include the assessment data and nursing management strategies. The
author should discuss the rationale for the chosen interventions as
they relate specifically to the clinical situation. Conclude with an
evaluation of the nursing management.
- Summary:
1/2 page, double-spaced, or 3 to 4 sentences. Relate what you learned
or what your nursing care accomplished back to the intended patient
outcome(s). Was the outcome achieved? If not, why not?
- Provide a brief closing statement.
